Gimlets: The smaller or bottle gimlets - forets a bouteilles - were used to pierce bottle corks at an
oblique angle to ease them out by resting the metal shaft on the bottle neck.
The heavier ones - coups de poings - were used by wine merchants and custom officers to puncture wine
barrels in order to check the contents without needing to remove a bung and wasting large quantities of wine.
The small hole would then be quickly plugged with a tapered piece of wood hammered into the small hole. |
